Luca Marinelli

Luca Marinelli is the kind of actor who makes you feel slightly embarrassed that you discovered him so late. This Roman-born guy has been quietly stacking one indelible performance after another since at least 2010 — showing up in Paolo Sorrentino's The Great Beauty, turning heads in the Italian superhero film They Call Me Jeeg, and then absolutely leveling audiences with his lead turn in Martin Eden, which earned him the Volpi Cup at Venice in 2019. That award wasn't a surprise prize for a nobody — it was long-overdue international recognition for someone who's been doing serious, committed work for years. He's the rare actor who brings genuine interior complexity to every character without seeming to try, and his Nastro d'Argento and David di Donatello wins back that up. I'm convinced Hollywood hasn't fully figured out what to do with him yet, but European cinema already knows.
