My Take
Megan Mullally is, to my mind, one of the great technicians of American comedy. Karen Walker could have been a one-note cartoon, all shrill voice and casual cruelty, but Mullally tuned every element with a musician's precision, and two Emmys barely cover the achievement. What I find most instructive is that she broke through near forty, after years of stage work and a Northwestern education; her timing is the timing of someone who earned it the long way. Add the stage roles, the voice acting, and the singing, and you get a performer who treats comedy as a craft, not a personality. I trust her instincts completely.
