Miho Watanabe

Miho Watanabe, born in Saitama in 2000, started out as an idol and has since built a second career as an actress and broadcaster. She's led shows like With You, Who Wanted to Be A Star and Good Morning, Sleeping Lion, and appeared in the first live-action adaptation of the Love Live! franchise. What interests me is the transition itself. In Japan, moving from idol work to acting is a well-worn path, but it's rarely an easy one; the label follows you, and critics are quick to read any performance as a former idol playing dress-up. The only real answer is volume and consistency, which is what her filmography looks like to me: not one breakout role that settled the question, but a steady accumulation of leads that makes the question stop being asked. That she also works in radio suggests she's comfortable carrying something on voice and timing alone, which is its own separate skill and not a small one.
