My Take
Mike Wallace is, to my mind, the journalist's journalist, and I hold him in real esteem. As an original correspondent on 60 Minutes he spent seven decades pressing the powerful with questions that made them sweat, the very ideal of investigative reporting. His Brookline roots and Michigan education gave him a sturdy backbone. The Hollywood star was no vanity prize. He died in 2012 at 93, but his refusal to flatter his subjects is precisely the quality I find most lacking in much of today's coverage. I confess I rather envy an era when such a formidable interrogator commanded the screen.
