My Take

What strikes me most about Naomi Grossman is how much warmth she smuggles underneath grotesque makeup. Pepper in American Horror Story could have been a freak-show prop, but she gave the character genuine soul and dignity. Coming out of Northwestern and writing her own material, she reads to me as a thinking actor rather than a mere face for monster roles. I have a soft spot for performers who play the frightening with tenderness, because it takes more intelligence and craft than glamour ever does. I would gladly watch her go fully unhinged again, knowing the heart underneath stays intact.
