My Take
Phil Manzanera is, in my view, one of rock's most tasteful and adventurous guitarists. As the lead guitarist of Roxy Music, he gave Bryan Ferry's art-rock its angular, exploratory edge, and tracks like "Out of the Blue" still sound thrillingly modern to me. What I find compelling is his half-Colombian heritage, which threaded Latin colour into his playing, and his restless side projects like 801 and Quiet Sun. He later co-produced David Gilmour's On an Island and toured in his band, which tells you how respected he is among peers. The London-born musician never chased the spotlight, he chased the sound. A guitarist's guitarist.
