My Take

Phil Ramone was basically the secret weapon behind some of the best-sounding records of the twentieth century. When you hear the warmth and clarity on Billy Joel's 52nd Street or Paul Simon's solo work, that is Ramone's ear at work. What I love is that he started as a violin prodigy and turned that musicality into engineering genius, treating the studio like an instrument. His final triumph, Ray Charles's Genius Loves Company winning Album of the Year, was a fitting capstone. He defined what a modern producer could be, and the industry still runs on his blueprint.
