My Take
R.F. Kuang is one of the most exciting writers working today, and I do not say that lightly. Guangzhou-born, Cambridge-educated, she won the Nebula and Locus awards for Babel while still in her twenties, a book that weaponizes the act of translation itself to expose empire and exploitation. What I admire is how she fuses real intellect and real anger without ever forgetting that a novel must first be gripping. From the brutal Poppy War trilogy to the publishing satire of Yellowface, she keeps reinventing her register. I read every new release of hers with genuine anticipation.
