My Take

R. L. Burnside is one of my favorite kinds of artists, the late bloomer whose authenticity finally found its audience. A Mississippi hill country bluesman, he played for decades in obscurity before his 1995 collaboration with Jon Spencer pushed him into punk and garage rock circles. What I love is the raw, hypnotic repetition of his style; it is not about polish but about lived experience pressed into sound. There is dirt and decades of survival in those grooves. That younger rockers embraced him so fervently tells me everything. Real music does not expire, and Burnside proves it took the world too long to listen.
