My Take
Ronald Vale genuinely awes me. The Hollywood-born biochemist devoted himself to motor proteins, kinesin and dynein, the tiny molecular machines that haul cargo through our cells. In other words, he helped reveal the courier service that keeps life moving. The roster of honors, Lasker, Shaw, the Gairdner International, is essentially a who's who of Nobel antechambers. What draws me to him is the patience required to chase truth in a world far too small to see. There is nothing flashy about this work, yet it pushed human knowledge forward in a real way. I have a soft spot for quiet giants, and Vale is unmistakably one of them.
