My Take

Rue McClanahan turned what could have been a one-note character—the man-hungry Southern belle—into one of television's great comic creations. As Blanche Devereaux she played vanity and appetite without ever losing the warmth underneath, and that balance is harder to pull off than most drama. I love that her Emmy came in her fifties, after years of solid work on Maude and Mama's Family; it is proof that comedy rewards craft, not just youth. She wrote an autobiography, designed fashion, and kept working to the end. For me she is the patron saint of late-blooming brilliance, and The Golden Girls simply does not work without her.
