My Take
Sawako Naito is the kind of politician who makes you reconsider your assumptions about Japanese politics — she's a 1984-born woman from Tokushima who clawed her way through to Tokyo University, and that journey alone tells you she's not someone who takes the easy road. Growing up in Tokushima City, going to Tokushima Bunri for high school, then landing at one of Japan's most competitive universities takes a level of discipline that most people honestly don't have. I don't know enough about her day-to-day policy work to get specific, but there's something refreshing about a younger woman who became Tokushima Prefecture's first female mayor, serving as mayor of Tokushima City from 2020 to 2024, in a political world that's still very much dominated by older men. I find myself rooting for her in that quiet, underdog-from-the-provinces kind of way.
