Shingo Katori

Shingo Katori arrived as the youngest member of SMAP and grew in the least predictable direction of any of them. Born in Yokohama in 1977 and standing 182 cm, he is physically imposing, which is part of why his comedy lands: a very large man committing completely to something idiotic is funnier than a small one doing the same. Then he turns around and carries Kondo Isami in a year-long NHK historical drama without a wink. That range is unusual, and the fact that both registers suit him feels almost unfair. After SMAP ended he restarted with two bandmates as Atarashii Chizu, and kept painting seriously enough to hold a solo exhibition in Paris. He also holds a Medal with Dark Blue Ribbon for charitable giving.
