My Take

Spike Lee is, to me, less a director than a chronicler with a conscience. Raised between Atlanta roots and New York streets, he has spent a career staring directly at race, urban poverty, and the dishonesty of media, never flinching to make audiences comfortable. That is why I rank him among the most essential filmmakers of his era. What impresses me even more is that the Oscar for adapted screenplay and the honorary award never softened his edge. His films still arrive full of anger and tenderness in equal measure, and I find myself genuinely eager for whatever he decides to make next.
