My Take

Steve Allen is one of those figures whose fingerprints are so ubiquitous they have become invisible. The desk, the band, the ad-libbed audience bits, the host who is smarter than he lets on: that entire late-night grammar traces back to him and the original Tonight Show. What fascinates me is the range, because this was a comedian who also won a Grammy for jazz composition and wrote shelves of books. He treated television as a playground for a restless intellect rather than a fame machine. Every late-night host working today is, knowingly or not, doing a Steve Allen impression. That is about as deep as influence gets.
