Steven Stayner

Steven Stayner's story stops me cold every time. Abducted at seven in Merced and held for years, he ultimately escaped not just for himself but to rescue a far younger captive alongside him. To me that single act reframes him entirely: not merely a victim of an unspeakable crime, but a kid who refused to leave another child behind. His death at twenty-four feels brutally unfair. I'd rather his name be remembered for that flash of moral courage than for the horror that surrounded it. Some lives demand we look past the headlines and honor the person.
