My Take
Tyla feels like a genuine new center of gravity in global pop. Coming out of Gauteng, South Africa, she broke worldwide with 2023's 'Water,' and what I admire is her refusal to chase someone else's trend; instead she carried her own country's groove to the top, earning the 'Queen of Popiano' tag by fusing pop and amapiano. The 2024 Grammy for Best African Music Performance and her sweep of newcomer honors point to real, grounded momentum rather than hype. Watching African music step into the world's spotlight on its own terms genuinely excites me, and she is an artist whose next moves I want to keep following closely.
