My Take

Volkan Babacan is the quietly heroic type I find easy to admire. Born in Antalya in 1988, the 188 cm goalkeeper first caught the world's eye at the 2005 U-17 World Championship, steering Turkey to third place. Goalkeeping is the loneliest, most thankless job in football: one mistake erases a hundred saves. To shoulder that pressure as a teenager and keep doing it for years takes a particular kind of nerve. I have a weakness for the players who decide matches from the back, the last line of defense, and Babacan's long career in that role earns my genuine respect.
