My Take

Yasuzō Masumura is one of those directors I keep coming back to whenever I want to remember what it felt like when Japanese cinema was genuinely dangerous. He studied film in Rome under Antonioni's influence, came back to Daiei Studios in the late 1950s, and basically declared war on the passive, stoic protagonists that postwar Japanese film had built its reputation on. His characters — especially his women — want things, furiously, and they don't apologize for it. Tokyo University graduate turned provocateur: that's a combination that could easily produce something cold and intellectual, but Masumura's movies are anything but cold. Giants and Toys, Blind Beast, Tattoo — each one feels like someone grabbed you by the collar. He died young at 62, and I genuinely think the full scale of what we lost only becomes clearer the older his films get.
