My Take

Zhou Dongyu is one of the most emotionally fearless actors of her generation, and that is what draws me to her. Discovered by Zhang Yimou and now decorated with the Golden Horse, Hong Kong Film, and Golden Rooster awards, she has earned every accolade by going somewhere genuinely raw. What fascinates me is her range: she can be luminous and girlish one moment, then plunge into bruised, almost unbearable feeling the next. Small in stature, she dominates the frame anyway. For me she is proof that Chinese cinema's future is in very capable, very brave hands.
