My Take
Wanrong's life reads to me as one long lesson in what a title is worth when the thing behind it has already collapsed. Born in Beijing in 1906 into the Gobulo clan of the Manchu Plain White Banner, she married Puyi in 1922 and became empress consort of the Qing dynasty at a moment when the dynasty existed mainly on paper. The empire had fallen a decade earlier; the imperial family lived in the Forbidden City on a negotiated arrangement, and in November 1924 even that ended when they were expelled. She held one of the most exalted positions in Chinese history and it protected her from almost nothing. She died in 1946, aged thirty-nine. Popular history tends to file her as a supporting character in Puyi's story, occasionally under the anachronistic English name Elizabeth, but I think that inverts the interest. Puyi at least had agency in his choices, disastrous as many were. Wanrong was placed, by birth and by marriage, on a piece of ground that was already giving way.
