Schubert is one of those figures who makes you genuinely sad that the world only got 31 years of him. He composed over a thousand pieces — symphonies, string quartets, piano sonatas, and more than 600 songs — while largely unknown outside a small circle of Viennese friends. What gets me is the emotional range: Winterreise is one of the most devastating song cycles ever written, and then he turns around and gives you something warm and playful in the same year. The Unfinished Symphony alone would be a career highlight for most composers. He died in 1828, just a year after Beethoven, and he'd actually asked to be buried near him. That wish was granted. A quiet giant whose reputation only grew after he was gone.
