My Take

To me, Papa Jo Jones is one of the true architects of modern jazz drumming. Anchoring the Count Basie Orchestra from 1934 to 1948, he shifted the pulse off the bass drum and onto the hi-hat, giving swing its weightless, shimmering forward motion. Almost every great drummer who followed studied his touch. His NEA Jazz Masters recognition only confirms what the recordings already prove. What I love most is that you can hear the moment the music changes when he plays. He didn't just keep time, he redefined what time could feel like in jazz.
