My Take

Dame Judith Anderson is one of the great forces of 20th-century acting, and most people know her without realizing it, from her chilling Mrs. Danvers in Hitchcock's Rebecca. Born in Adelaide in 1897, she conquered stage, film and television with a presence that could freeze a room. Two Emmys, a Tony, plus Grammy and Oscar nominations, and a damehood, is an extraordinary haul, and her Lady Macbeth was legendary. I love that she stayed working into the modern TV era while never softening that imperious edge. She died in 1992, but her menace on screen still feels utterly contemporary.
