Kevin Hassett

Kevin Hassett strikes me as the kind of figure who shapes a country quietly rather than loudly. A Massachusetts native trained at the University of Pennsylvania, he climbed from a conservative think tank to chairing the Council of Economic Advisers and later directing the National Economic Council. I am drawn less to the titles than to the temperament they imply: someone willing to do the unglamorous, consequential work of building policy out of numbers. Whatever one thinks of his politics, there is a craftsman's discipline in that path, and I find that steadiness genuinely worth respecting.
