Kuo Tai-yuan

Kuo Tai-yuan was born in Tainan in March 1962 and won 117 games in 13 seasons with the Seibu Lions, the most by any international player in Nippon Professional Baseball history. Today a player crossing borders is unremarkable; in his era the path barely existed, and taking it meant absorbing a different language, a different food, a different mound, and then being expected to perform anyway. That is a harder job than the box score can show. Listed at 180 cm, he pitched long enough and well enough that his name is recognised on both sides of the strait — in Japan he is known by the Japanese reading of his characters, Kaku Taigen, which is its own small monument to how thoroughly he belonged to that league. He has since worked as a coach. I like that arc: the arm eventually stops, but the knowledge of how to survive a foreign league at the highest level is exactly the sort of thing worth handing to the next person willing to try it.
