My Take

Brezhnev interests me less as a villain or hero than as a case study in the politics of comfort. An engineer from a Ukrainian steel town who climbed to the very top of the Soviet system, he presided over eighteen years that critics call stagnation and nostalgists call stability. The mountain of medals he accumulated, many effectively awarded to himself, reads like satire, yet it says something true about late Soviet ritual. I find his era essential reading because it shows how a superpower can decline not through catastrophe but through inertia, one comfortable, unreformed year at a time.
