My Take

Markus Toivonen embodies a stubborn kind of devotion I can't help but admire. A Helsinki-born guitarist, he founded the folk-metal band Ensiferum back in 1995 and remains its sole surviving original member. Bands mutate and members drift away, yet he never lowered the flag. As guitarist, vocalist and primary songwriter, he's the structural backbone of the whole project, weaving Finland's cold forests and mythology into thunderous, epic metal. There's a real chill-down-the-spine quality to that Nordic, saga-like sound. Guarding the music you believe in for three decades without chasing trends is something I deeply respect, and any fan of Nordic metal should give Ensiferum a listen.
