My Take

Being John Wayne's eldest son could have been a curse, and what I admire about Michael Wayne is how he turned it into stewardship. Rather than chase the spotlight as an actor, this Los Angeles native chose the producer's chair, guarding and extending his father's Western legacy from behind the scenes. That kind of quiet, unglamorous loyalty appeals to me far more than vanity casting ever could. He bridged Hollywood's golden age to the next generation without demanding applause for himself. When he died in 2003, the industry lost a careful custodian of a giant's name, and I think that role deserves more credit than it gets.
