Mose Allison is one of those names that musicians revere far more than the public does, and I always find those careers the most rewarding to dig into. A Mississippi pianist and singer who blended jazz and blues with wry, literate lyrics, he influenced everyone from The Who to Van Morrison, which is wild for someone so understated. The NEA Jazz Masters honor confirms the establishment caught up eventually. He worked from 1927 until his death in 2016, a remarkably long run.
