Noriko Awaya

Noriko Awaya is a case study in what classical training can do for popular music. Born in Aomori in 1907, she trained as a soprano at what is now the Tokyo College of Music, then walked away from the concert hall into ryūkōka, Japan's prewar popular song, and became known as the Queen of Blues.
