My Take

Norman Lear is, in my view, one of television's great consciences. Through All in the Family, The Jeffersons, Maude, Sanford and Son and more, he smuggled race, politics, and uncomfortable family truths into prime-time comedy, making living rooms laugh and think at the same time, which is far harder than it looks. The Emmy, the Peabody, the National Medal of Arts all feel like understatements for someone who produced over a hundred shows across seventy years and lived to 101. Born in New Haven, this Leo burned like a sun over his industry. That an award bears his name is, to me, the clearest measure of his legacy.
