My Take
Blatter is a fascinating study in how power over the world's most-loved sport can both elevate and corrode a man. I find it telling that an economist from a quiet Swiss town in Valais could rise to rule FIFA for seventeen years, collecting honors from governments worldwide, only to be undone by the corruption scandal that suspended him. To me he embodies the uneasy marriage of football's beauty and its murky business. I respect his political shrewdness while remaining wary of what unchecked authority did. He is, above all, a cautionary figure I cannot stop finding compelling.
