Yuka Kagami

Yuka Kagami wins in the weight class that Japanese women's wrestling was never supposed to own. Born in Yamagata in 2001, she took gold at 76 kg at the 2024 Paris Olympics, and the year before that she had already won gold at the World Championships in Belgrade. She is also a multiple medalist at the Asian Championships. Put those together and the Olympic title stops looking like a good day and starts looking like the correct result. That distinction matters to me. Japan's reputation in women's wrestling was built largely in the lighter categories, where technical speed dominates; Kagami built hers at the heaviest, where you cannot outrun anyone and the contest is settled by strength, positioning and sheer refusal to yield. At 167 cm competing in that division, she is not the biggest body on the mat — which makes the results more impressive, not less. She is still in her early twenties, and the ceiling is not yet in view.
