My Take

Elaine Stritch is exactly the kind of artist I revere: a Detroit-born triple threat who sang, acted, and cracked wise her way through nearly seventy years of show business. Three Emmys, an American Theater Hall of Fame induction, and that scene-stealing turn as Jack Donaghy's mother on 30 Rock all point to the same thing, a performer whose lived-in toughness was her instrument. She made her stage debut back in 1944 and never softened the edges. I love that she carried her age, her booze-and-Broadway grit, and her unfiltered candor right onto the stage. When she died in 2014, the theater lost a genuine original.

Elaine Stritch (February 2, 1925 – July 17, 2014) was an American actress, singer, and comedian, known for her work on Broadway and later, television. She made her professional stage debut in 1944 and appeared in numerous stage plays, musicals, feature films and television series. Stritch was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 1995. Stritch made her Broadway debut in the 1946 comedy Loco.
