My Take

Fela Kuti is one of those rare artists where the music and the man are inseparable. From Abeokuta he built Afrobeat out of West African rhythm, American funk, and jazz, then aimed the whole thing straight at political power. What grips me is that he treated music as a weapon, not entertainment, daring you to dance while he confronted the state. The long, hypnotic tracks feel like sustained acts of defiance. He died in 1997, but the 2014 legend award barely captures his reach. To me he proves rhythm can carry the full weight of conscience.
