No one bottled the sound of America quite like George Gershwin. A Brooklyn immigrant's son who leapt blithely across the line between jazz and the concert hall, he poured the city's noise, longing, and swagger into Rhapsody in Blue. An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess still unsettle me in the best way every time. What astonishes me is how he smuggled real artistry into melodies you can hum without effort. Dead at just 38, he left me forever wondering what twenty more years would have done to music. The posthumous Pulitzer was no less than his due.
