Kazuki Sugiyama

Kazuki Sugiyama, born December 1997, is a pitcher who came out of Suruga Sogo High School in Shizuoka and reached Nippon Professional Baseball with the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks. He moved to the bullpen in 2024, took over as closer partway through 2025, led the league in saves that year, and was named an outstanding player of the Japan Series. He is in his twenties, in a organization with famously deep pitching, where simply holding a roster spot means beating out a crowd of talented arms every spring. That is a real accomplishment in itself. Careers in baseball are decided in a narrow window, and his is open now. The interesting question is whether this page looks different in five years. I would rather say that plainly than pretend to know the answer.
