My Take

Todd is irresistible to me as a portrait of showbiz at full throttle. He rose from a Minneapolis soda counter to producing Around the World in 80 Days, which seized the 1957 Best Picture Oscar, the kind of brash, oversized gamble that defined an older Hollywood. His marriage to Elizabeth Taylor adds a heartbreaking footnote: he was the only husband she never divorced, lost a year in to a private-plane crash. Dead at forty-eight, he packed a lifetime of spectacle into a startlingly short run. I find his story strangely poignant, a single enormous firework, blazing bright and gone almost before you can take it in.
