My Take

Portia de Rossi earns my respect twice over. First as an actress: her Nelle Porter on Ally McBeal was ice-cold comic precision, and her later television work showed she could be gloriously absurd too. Second, and more importantly, as a person who wrote honestly about her struggles in her autobiography and lived openly when that still carried real career risk in Hollywood. A small-town Australian who studied at the University of Melbourne, she always struck me as smarter than the roles she was offered. Stepping away from acting on her own terms feels entirely consistent with that intelligence.
