My Take
Renny Harlin fascinates me precisely because he embodies both the highs and lows of Hollywood spectacle. From tiny Riihimäki in Finland, he muscled his way into the American blockbuster machine and gave us the genuine adrenaline of Cliffhanger and Deep Blue Sea. Yet he also carries Cutthroat Island, one of the most infamous box office disasters ever made. I find that combination oddly admirable. He swings for the fences every time, and you only get titanic flops if you also attempt titanic ambitions. In an era of cautious, committee-made films, a director willing to gamble that boldly feels increasingly rare and worth remembering.
