My Take

With Ronald Reagan, the part that grips me is the sheer second act. A man from Tampico, Illinois, who stood in front of Hollywood cameras and then became the 40th President of the United States, lending his name to an entire era. The politics remain hotly contested, and I won't pretend otherwise, but 'Tear down this wall!' lands the way it does precisely because a performer said it; the cadence was trained on stage long before it reached Berlin. Persuasion was his craft. He died in 2004, yet the term 'Reagan era' endures, which tells you the scale. I'm less moved by the verdict than by the improbable reinvention itself.
