My Take
Sam Spiegel may be my favorite kind of figure in film: the producer whose name rarely reaches the public yet whose taste defined an era. A Polish-born immigrant educated in Vienna, he became the first sole independent producer to win Best Picture three times, with On the Waterfront, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia. I am in awe of the nerve required to assemble works of that scale without a studio's safety net. To me he embodies the invisible architect, the person whose judgment and persistence make masterpieces possible while the credit flows to others.
