My Take
Tommy Lasorda is one of those figures where the legend and the man are basically inseparable — he didn't just manage the Los Angeles Dodgers for two decades, he bled Dodger blue and made sure everyone in earshot knew it. Born in a small Pennsylvania town in 1927, he came up as a pitcher but found his true calling in the dugout, steering the Dodgers from 1976 to 1996, winning two World Series titles and the 1983 Manager of the Year Award along the way. What I love about him is the unapologetic passion — the guy hugged players, argued with umpires like it was performance art, and somehow managed to get Japan to award him the Order of the Rising Sun for his role in building bridges through baseball. Hall of Famer, ambassador of the game, genuinely one of a kind. He passed in January 2021 at 93, and the sport is quieter for it.
