Pilar Pallete

Pilar Pallete is too often filed away as John Wayne's wife, and that framing frustrates me. Born in Paita, Peru in 1928, she built a long parallel life as a painter, which to me is the more interesting story. Marrying into Hollywood royalty could easily have erased a person; instead she kept a brush in her hand and an identity of her own. I am drawn to figures who lived mostly off-screen, because their inner lives are harder to read and usually richer. Nearly a century in, hers is a quiet, self-possessed example of refusing to be only someone else's footnote.
