My Take
Rakugo can look like a museum piece from the outside: one performer, one cushion, no props, stories that are centuries old. Shinosuke Tatekawa, born in 1954 in Shinminato in Toyama Prefecture and a graduate of Meiji University, has spent his career arguing otherwise. In 2003 he helped form Rokunin-no-Kai, a group of six performers whose stated purpose was to bring rakugo to younger Japanese audiences, and in 2015 he received the Medal with Purple Ribbon for his contribution to the art. What I find quietly impressive is the strategy. He did not modernise rakugo by diluting it; he made himself visible enough that people who would never buy a ticket to a traditional hall came anyway, and then gave them the real thing. Popularity used as a delivery mechanism rather than a destination. That is a harder and less glamorous project than reinvention, and it is probably the reason the form still has an audience under forty.
