My Take
Stan Getz is, for my money, the most seductive tenor saxophonist jazz ever produced. They called him "The Sound" for good reason: that breathy, singing tone, inherited from Lester Young, could melt steel. The 1965 Grammy sweep for his bossa nova work proved a Philadelphia kid could channel Brazilian saudade more convincingly than almost anyone. What I love is his restraint; he chased lyricism over fireworks, beauty over bebop bravado. Decades after his death, his recordings remain my go-to for proving that jazz can be both sophisticated and instantly, achingly human.
